Journey of Self-love

What is self-love, you may ask? Self-love can be seen for each person in various ways, such as regard for one’s well-being, love for oneself, and overall basic human necessities, as well as enhancing our personal growth and happiness for now and eternity. People may sometimes battle the complex challenges of low self-esteem, which stems from a lack of self-love and self-acceptance. The inner conflict we have with ourselves can develop from various factors, which is why the journey of self-love is a unique experience for every individual. Low self-esteem can be seen as ignoring their feelings, lack of boundaries, confidence, and fear of letting others down. Self-love allows the individual to gain that confidence, learn to accept and love their feelings and set limits for themselves.

Journey of self-love in counselling: Within a therapeutic journey, as counsellors, we support the client and guide them into the path of acceptance and the power of self-love to increase their self-esteem, respect and compassion to grow and heal within one another. The counsellor’s objective is to help clients enhance their sense of self and understand its importance in their spiritual, physical and psychological well-being. Within a therapeutic environment, the counsellor will challenge those negative thoughts and identify the barriers that may be imposed on them while implementing goal-setting skills, mindfulness and understanding the connection and influence between one’s thoughts, behaviour and emotions.

Why is it important you may ask?

The implications of struggling with low self-esteem and ignoring one’s emotions can result in various adverse outcomes, such as depression. This may also result in unhealthy habits that are portrayed as a coping mechanism that causes a self-sabotage domino effect. To avoid this catastrophe from emerging, seeking support and guidance will help redirect the unwanted behaviours and coping skills into more positive, self-efficient and beneficial tactics. Overcoming this predicament and understanding the importance of self-esteem while embarking on one’s journey to self-love can increase the quality of one’s life while obtaining success.
